For parts requiring many colors or extensive decoration, Ferromatik Milacron offers the in-mold labeling (IML) and in-mold decoration (IMD) processes. With in-mold decoration a quick-change film with the design is guided through the mold on an endless roll. By back molding onto the film, the decoration is effectively transferred to the part while still inside the mold. With in-mold labeling a 2D-, or preformed 3D decorative film is placed in the mold cavity and back molded, bonding it with the part. The advantages of in-mold decoration lie in the relatively simple automation it requires and low production costs. Key advantages of in-mold labeling are the improved graphics and the elimination of costly downstream processes.
